Your geometry. A considered process.

Non-standard parts, welded assemblies and connection kits developed from your file or a sample. The first job is to find the process that can actually hold the drawing.

STARTING FILES

A price needs a defined solid, not a sketch alone.

PDF is enough to see intent. DXF or DWG is enough to quote a flat profile if the revision, units and thickness are on the sheet. STEP is the cleanest way to describe a bent or welded part, provided the model matches the PDF you want inspected. A sample is useful when the file is incomplete. It is measured, then drawn, then confirmed by you before it becomes the revision.

Send one package per assembly. Loose plates that ship inside a weldment should be either in the assembly model or listed as separate lines. Hidden parts are the usual reason a quotation and a packing list disagree.

Accepted starting points

  • PDFControlled drawing with revision, units, material and the views that will be inspected.
  • DXF / DWGFlat geometry. Say which layer is the profile and which is a bend line or a note.
  • STEP / STP3D model for formed and welded parts. Name the matching PDF revision.
  • SampleA physical reference. Dimensions still get written down before production.

Process is part of the specification.

Cutting, forming and welding are not interchangeable ways to reach the same drawing.

Cutting

Laser, punch or saw changes the edge, the hole quality and the minimum web between holes. If a drawing forbids a hardened laser edge or a punched breakout, say so. Otherwise the factory will propose the route that holds the tolerance at your quantity.

Forming

Press-brake parts need a radius the thickness can survive, a bend order that does not trap the tool, and a note when an inside dimension matters more than the outside. A radius drawn as a sharp corner is a question, not an instruction.

Welding

Show size, length and side. If you need a documented weld procedure, a named inspection level, or a third-party witness, that is a separate scope. It is quoted only when the drawing or the enquiry asks for it.

KITS AND REVISIONS

Lock the revision before the batch repeats.

Custom work goes wrong in the gap between sample and batch. Someone accepts a hole moved by two millimetres, the email is not copied onto the drawing, and the next container follows the old file. The process page describes the lock: one revision, a written sample decision, then batch production against that pair.

If the shipment is a kit, define the kit on paper. “One set per frame” needs the frame’s bill of materials, the bag or carton that holds it, and the label an installer can read without opening every box. Hardware is included only when the brief lists the standard, the grade and the coating.

Commercial lines to expect

  • ProgrammingNesting, bend programs and fixtures, separated from the piece price.
  • SampleHow many, which revision, and what must be true before the batch starts.
  • BatchUnit price at a stated quantity, with the finish and packing included or itemised.
  • ChangeWhat happens to price and date if the revision moves after the sample.

Scope checks.

Can one factory make every process on the drawing?

Not necessarily. RIBSPAN matches the part to a cooperating factory’s process. If a drawing needs a process that partner cannot hold, that is said before the order, not discovered at inspection.

Is a prototype the same article as the production part?

Only when it uses the same material, the same route and the same revision. A hand-finished sample can prove fit and still be a poor predictor of a tooled batch.

Do you redesign the part?

We will flag a radius, a weld or a hole that is difficult to make as drawn. Changing the design is your engineer’s decision. The quotation follows the revision you approve.

What file wins if PDF and STEP disagree?

You name the winner in the brief. If you do not, we will ask before anyone programs a machine.
